Gmail now supports non-ssl encrypted emails when being sent to a gmail recipient:

In Summary, use the DNS resolver with DNS server 8.8.8.8 and resolve the hostname:
aspmx.l.google.com
Connect to the resolved IP and then send the email.
This only works for gmail recipients.
